Before a Textile Can Be Recycled, It Has to Be Understood

In our previous post, we explored why the biggest challenge in textile recycling is no longer the recycling technology itself, but the system surrounding it. That system begins long before a textile reaches a recycling machine. Every garment first needs to be collected, identified, sorted, and directed to the most suitable recovery pathway. In fact, these early stages often determine whether a textile can be recycled at all - and what it may become afterwards.

This has become even more relevant with the latest European policy developments. As of July 2026, large companies across the EU are no longer allowed to destroy unsold textile products. Instead of being discarded before ever reaching consumers, these textiles now need to be collected, assessed, and directed towards reuse or recycling. The regulation is an important step towards reducing waste - but it also highlights a much bigger question: once textiles are saved from destruction, what happens next?

Collection is the first step, but not all textile waste is the same. Some textiles have never been worn and arrive directly from manufacturers or retailers. Others come from households after years of use. Production offcuts are usually clean, homogeneous, and easy to process, while post-consumer textiles arrive in every possible condition: clean or dirty, damaged or reusable, made from a single fibre or complex blends. Before recycling can even be considered, each item must be assessed for its condition, composition, and potential value.

This makes sorting one of the most important - and technically demanding - stages of the entire recycling chain. The question is no longer simply "What material is this?" but rather "What is the best possible future for this product?"

A garment in good condition may be suitable for reuse. A clean cotton T-shirt could be mechanically recycled into new fibres. Polyester-rich textiles may be directed towards chemical recycling. More complex or mixed-material products may find a second life in nonwoven materials such as insulation, acoustic panels, geotextiles, furniture padding, carpets, filtration media, or other industrial applications. Choosing the right pathway preserves as much material value as possible and helps avoid unnecessary downcycling or disposal.

Making these decisions is becoming increasingly sophisticated. While experienced operators still play a vital role, modern sorting facilities are beginning to combine manual expertise with advanced technologies. Near-Infrared (NIR) scanners identify fibre compositions within seconds. Hyperspectral imaging detects subtle material differences invisible to the human eye. Artificial intelligence helps classify garments based on fibre content, colour, construction, and quality, while robotic systems can automate repetitive sorting tasks with growing precision. Together, these technologies are making sorting faster, more consistent, and capable of handling larger volumes of textile waste.

Looking ahead, Digital Product Passports could make this process even more efficient. Instead of relying solely on sensors to identify materials, recyclers may one day access accurate information about a product's fibre composition, additives, and manufacturing history before processing even begins. Combined with AI-assisted sorting, this could significantly improve recycling quality and reduce contamination across the recycling system.

At RMP, we see sorting not simply as a preparation step, but as the foundation of effective textile recycling. New rules can keep more textiles out of landfills and incinerators, but only efficient collection, sorting, and recovery systems can ensure these materials remain in use. The better we understand textiles before they enter a recycling process, the better we can preserve their value and match them with the technologies best suited to give them a second life.
